How to choose the suitable cooling fan for heatsink design

CPU heatsink thermal design has existed since the earliest desktop computer period. At the beginning, natural heat dissipation was adopted, and gradually transferred to forced air cooling. Now, liquid cooling and even liquid nitrogen cooling design has appeared. Although it has been developed for many years, some professional designers are sometimes misled because of the fancy market publicity.

Bigger Fan, better prformance:

Many people believe that the size of the fan directly determines the heat dissipation performance of the system. The fan plays an important role in the design of heat dissipation scheme, but the size of the fan can not directly determine the comprehensive performance of the scheme. Generally, large-size fans may obtain greater air volume at the same speed, but under the condition of obtaining the same air volume, large-size fans can obtain better silencing effect than small-size fans. However, with the improvement of the integration of electronic products, large-size fans occupy a lot of heat dissipation design space, which makes the design of radiator difficult.

Moreover, for computer chassis, the air duct is relatively simple. For plug-in products such as servers and transmission equipment, large fans will also lead to uneven distribution of air volume. In addition, the failure consequences of large-size fans are often more serious.

The Bearing fan is better than oil pressure fan:

For the life of the fan, the biggest impact is the fan bearing. There are generally two designs for fans on the market, namely ball and oil seal. Ball is only a type of bearing, not just ball, and inferior ball bearings have terrible noise. But the high-quality oil seal bearing has better silent performance than the ball bearing, and the service life is also good.

Small turbine fan has weak performance:

Small turbine fans have high speed and air volume, and the diameter of heat dissipation changes from top to side. However, many consumers believe that this kind of fan has a big hard injury, that is, super large "noise". The widespread use of turbofans is actually more due to the helplessness of compressing the thermal design space. Although the air volume is low, the wind pressure of turbine fan is generally much larger than that of axial fan of the same size.

Optimizing thermaldesign will not only make the use of products more safe and reliable, sometimes, the optimization of heat dissipation will also make qualitative changes to the improvement of product operation speed.
