New thermal materials can increase the charging speed of electric vehicles by five times

Recently, scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany have successfully reduced the thermal load on electronic components using ultra-thin diamond films and have the potential to increase the charging speed of electric vehicles by five times. The key to this technological breakthrough lies in the excellent thermal conductivity and insulation properties of diamond.

new energy thermal materials

As is well known, heat is a byproduct of electronic device operation, but excessive heat can damage components and even cause safety hazards. Therefore, heat dissipation has always been an important consideration in electronic product design. Traditional heat sinks typically use copper or aluminum materials, but they are also good conductors that require additional insulation for isolation.

Diamond is a unique material that combines excellent thermal conductivity (beneficial for heat dissipation) and electrical insulation (avoiding short circuits). It can be processed into a conductive path, which can efficiently transfer heat to copper heat sinks. Meanwhile, due to the flexibility and independence of diamond nanofilms, they can be placed anywhere on components or copper plates, and even directly integrated into cooling circuits.

Diamond cooling

In the past, the thickness of diamond heatsinks usually exceeded 2 millimeters and it was difficult to fit with the components. The new diamond nanofilm is only 1 micrometer thick and has good flexibility. It only needs to be slightly heated to 80 degrees Celsius to firmly bond with electronic components. The research team prepared these nanofilms by growing polycrystalline diamond films on silicon wafers, then peeling and etching the diamond layers.
Researchers estimate that diamond nanofilms can reduce the thermal load of electronic components by 10 times, significantly improving their lifespan and overall device energy efficiency. In addition, if this technology is applied to the charging system, it can also increase the charging speed of electric vehicles by five times.
