Thernal solution for battery applications

Battery cooling technology, also known as thermal management cooling technology, is essentially a heat exchange process that transfers the internal heat of the battery to the external environment through cooling media, thereby reducing the internal temperature of the battery. At present, it is widely used in power batteries, energy storage batteries, especially in containerized energy storage systems
When the battery temperature is too high, a series of side reactions will occur inside the battery, greatly affecting its lifespan. Therefore, a good heat dissipation system is crucial for the stable operation of the battery.

Battery thermal management

Air cooling technology is currently the most widely used battery cooling method. Air cooling requires fewer components, has a simple structure, low cost, and is widely used. In some medium to high rate products, due to the high charging and discharging current, relying solely on natural cooling cannot quickly and effectively dissipate the heat inside the module, which easily causes heat to accumulate inside and affects the cycle life of the battery cell. Therefore, the forced air cooling cooling method is more suitable for the application scenarios of medium and high rate energy storage products.

The advantage of liquid cooling technology lies in its higher specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity of the heat transfer medium, which better solves the thermal management of battery systems than air cooling heat dissipation. At present, there are two types of liquid cooling systems based on whether the coolant can directly contact the battery: direct contact and indirect contact liquid cooling systems.
Liquid cooling has better cooling effect than air cooling, and the heat exchange process is more direct, efficient, and enclosed. However, liquid cooling requires high sealing performance and manufacturing costs for the structure. Optimizing cooling plate materials, cooling plate positions, coolant selection, pipeline shape, and pipeline layout can all improve heat dissipation performance. Liquid cooling  technology will be the main development direction of future energy storage battery thermal technology.

The research on battery heat dissipation technology is a complex topic. In addition to meeting the characteristics of excellent cooling effect, compact structure, high safety, and strong universality, economic requirements also need to be considered.
