The main type of natural convection heat sink is extruded heatsink, it's manufactured by extruding the aluminum profiles and machined the specification as the requirement of the electronic devices. Natural convection is one of the most efficient thermal options for cooling the electronic components.

Heat convection is that the heat flows away from the heat source to cold medium by the fluid travelling, Natural convection means the fluid travelling is not caused by the external force but made by the natural environment, when the air flows to the heat sink and get expanded, the density of air would become less and the hot air will rise up and take away the heat from heat sink.

How to design a good natural convection heat sink?

1, Fins design

Fin is a critical part for a heat sink to increase the fluid contact surface area to dissipate the heat, in theory, the more fins a heat sink has, the more heat can be dissipated, but for natural convection, it doesn't make sense, when the fin density become too high, the air pass through the heat sink will be blocked, and need a force to push the air through the channel, so the fin density and thickness design is important.

2,Orientation

As the fluid flowing is caused by natural circumstances like buoyance and gravity, so the direction of heat sink is non neglected, it will has a significant influences in thermal resistance.

3, Thermal emissivity

For natural convection process, there is no forced air to cool the electronics, radiation is a critical heat dissiaption method, the main elements affect the emissivity include material property, temperature gradient, color, and roughness.
