Aluminum extruded heat sink: how they are proceeding?

  In the aluminum extrusion process, the metal is heated to a point that is soft enough that it can be extruded through an extrusion die, but cannot be manipulated when it's totally molten because it will drip. A hydraulic press pushes a plunger into the billet, forcing the aluminum through a tightly designed extrusion die. The die is a cross section of the extruded shape.

  Engineers design the extrusion die to produce the desired shape while being able to withstand the pressure on the aluminum billet without breaking itself. This is especially improtant for heat sink molds, as there are many fins that can come off the mold and fill the gaps in the fins. Excessive pressure on the fins can easily jam and destroy the mold.

  After the aluminum has been extruded, it is pulled along the beating table, where it is straightened and cooled. When originally manufactured, these bars can be hundreds of feet in length. Very long lengths need to be cut to more manageable lengths, usually around 8 feet, for ease of shipping and manufacturing.

  These aluminum profiles are then cut to length for the application in which they will be used. Any type of hole or other feature can be machined in the profile and customized as needed. Then process the surface finish like anodizing or painting to produce a finished extruded heat sink.
