How to choose the material of thermal heatsink

With the increasing integration of electronic components. Although many manufacturers have paid more and more attention to the thermal  performance of accessories, and the power consumption of individual products is getting lower and lower, electronic products will inevitably bring large heat dissipation while their performance is getting stronger and stronger. Therefore, a good heatsink has become a focus when we choose accessories.

Heatsink is widely used in all configurations in the host: CPU heatsink , motherboard , graphics card , memory, hard disk and North South Bridge heatsink. Is there any influence on the choose of material in heatsink?

heatsink design

Aluminum  material has become one of the most widely used heat dissipation materials because of its low price. Aluminum has the characteristics of low density, good ductility and easy processing. However, pure aluminum has insufficient hardness and poor cutting performance. Therefore, in actual production, manufacturers use aluminum alloy to manufacture actual products in order to ensure appropriate hardness of products (aluminum accounts for about 98% of the total composition). Compared with copper, although the thermal conductivity is worse, the higher specific heat capacity can reduce more heat while reducing the same temperature.

Aluminum cooling heatsink

Compared with aluminum, the thermal conductivity of pure copper is 401, which is nearly twice that of aluminum. Therefore, under normal circumstances, the conductivity of copper is very strong. However, although copper has good thermal conductivity, the specific heat capacity of copper heatsink is small and the heat dissipation speed is relatively slow, resulting in heat backlog, which is not conducive to overclocking and stability. It needs to be matched with high-power and high-speed fans or heat pipes to achieve the ideal heat dissipation effect. Moreover, the price of copper is more expensive and the processing is more difficult. Its excessive weight also brings some trouble for installation.

Copper CPU Heatsink

A good thermal heatsink depends not only on its material selection, but also on the overall design of the heatsink. The fins of the heatsink can increase its contact area with the air, and use the fan to accelerate the air flow, so as to take away the heat on the fins. Therefore, the fin area of the heatsink, the air volume of the fan, and good industrial design are important indicators that directly affect the performance of the heatsink.
