  Aluminum is the most widely used material for heat sinks. In particular, extruded aluminum heat sinks are used in many projects. The metal is lightweight and has relatively good thermal conductivity. But for some high power electronic devices, the extruded aluminum heat sink could not meet the thermal requirements, and due to the space for heat sink is limited, we need to improve the thermal performance of heat sink in a given volume, the thermal conductivity and heat dissipation are the two main factors dominate the thermal performance, skiving fin heat sink is the perfect solution as the fins are peeled from base, so there is no thermal resistance between the fins and base, which makes the skived fin heat sink has great thermal conductivity, also the skiving process can create very thin fins, small fin pitch and high aspect ratio that could not be achieved by extruding process. The top of the fins are then cut to maintain a uniform height.The surface finish of aluminum heat sink is usually anodizing which improve the anti-corrosion and anti-wear.

  It is not difficult to identify skived heatsink as the heatsink has a curve where the blade finishes its cut at the base of the heatsink, the fins are not completely vertical, and curve slightly. This is more pronounced at the fins get taller. Typical width of the plate fin is 200 mm, but it is possible to manufacture up to 400 mm wide heatsinks by rotating the block of material and running a second pass with the curvature of the fins being in the opposite direction. As a Skived heatsink is manufactured from a long block of material, the only is no real limit to length of the heatsink is the length of the block.  Different heights can be achieved by machining the block of material. Any excess material is recycled to reduce wastage.
