Aluminum bonded fin heat sink can achieve the higher fin height, thinner fin thickness and higher fin density which limits the extrusion technology, also bonding process can realize to use other metal like copper which has better thermal conductivity but which could not be extruded as aluminum.

Bonded fin heat sinks are widely used in applications which require the large size heat sink,  taller fins, higher fin density and thinner fins which can't be manufactured by extrusion process. Bonded fins is one of the best thermal options for high performance applications as its flexible design and manufacturing.

The process of bonding fins manufacturing

The structure of bonding fins heat sink is forcing the individual fins to the base slots with industrial epoxy or brazing technology. If you want to prototype the design and do the NPI test, bonding fin is a very cost effective method to save the extrusion tooling cost and make the design more flexible.

To build a boned fin heat sink, usually we will machine some grooves in one side of the base, then put the fins into the grooves and strength the joint by epoxy or soldering, brazing process. Also we can embed some heat pipes inside the heat source contact surface to improve the thermal performance to meet the high power devices thermal requirements.
