The heat sink goes through many changes from the initial simple heat sink to the current various types. In addition to more efficient and reliable heat dissipation performance, designers now need to consider the aesthetics of the radiator, so nickel plating of the radiator has become a fashion symbol. When nickel plating starts to became popular, it quickly wildly used in many kinds of heat sinks.

In fact, nickel plating on the heat sink is not only for aesthetics, but also for anti-corrosion, does nickel plating have impact on thermal performance?

Most of the current high power heat sinks are designed with copper heat pipes and fins, and the fins are generally made of aluminum alloy. Heat sinks generally consist of bases, heat pipes and fins. The heat generated by CPU is transmitted to the base, then to the heat pipe, and the heat pipes take the heat to the fins, and finally the heat on the fins is dissipated and  blown away by the fan.

Actually the heat dissipation process of the heat sink is not very complicated. It takes advantages of the thermal conductivity of metal to conduct heat from the CPU and conduct it to the fins. Our common  heat pipes are generally made of copper, and the fins are made of aluminum. Here is a question, how are the heat pipes, base and fins connected?

There are two ways to combine the heat pipe and the fins, one is by soldering, and the other is the more popular way of close-fitting. Soldering process is very common. The way of close-fitting is to insert the heat pipe between the fins, and the fins wrap the heat pipe, so that the contact area between the fin and the heat pipe increases, so the thermal efficiency would be better theoretically, but actually the gap between the fin and the copper tube cannot be completely eliminated. This is also an important factor for hindering the heat conduction efficiency. The gap between the heat pipe and the fin is filled with air, and air is the best insulating material, and the heat will be blocked by the gap between the heat pipe and the fin, so for the high performance heat sink, soldering process is still the best option, but for aluminum, if it's not nickel plated, it can't be soldered by the SiBi solder paste.

Some copper heat sink is also nickel plated, as we know, the thermal conductivity of nickel is worse than copper and aluminum, but why are some of the heat sinks need to be nickel plated? the reason is not only for the apperance. Copper is a very good conductor, and it's often used as contact plate to absorb the heat , there are two improtant properties of nickel which can answer why some heat sinks need to be plated despite the nickel has less thermal conductivity than copper and aluminum.

1, Nickel plated copper heat sink has better flatness, nickel has high surface gloss, when the copper contact plate is nickel plated which can make the contact area has a better surface flatness to reduce the thermal resistance between the heat source and heatsink, so it can improve the thermal performance.

2, Nickel has better corrode resistance, as nickel is very insert and hard to react, so the nickel plated copper heat sink has better corrode resistance and the nickel can protect the heat sink over decades.
