Basically, a CPU heat sink is a component which helps the CPU to dissipate heat and ensure the stable operation. If the CPU is overheated, it will trigger the temperature protection mechanism, which can reduce performance. Sometimes when your device is running at high load (playing games or processing a lot of data), it occasionally shuts down, or even blue screen. In fact, the occurrence of this situation may not be something wrong with your computer, but because your CPU temperature reaches the maximum temperature limit, it will reduce the power, so as to reduce the temperature to protect the hardware and cause a freeze, so a  good CPU heat sink is essential.

CPU heat sink can be basically classified into two types: one is air-cooling heat sink, and the other is water-cooling heat sink. Now we are talking about air cooling CPU heat sink.

The working principle of the air-cooled CPU heat sink: the base of the CPU radiator contacts with the CPU tightly. Since the CPU and the base of the radiator are both metal, there will be some gaps between them, and the thermal grease is mainly used to fill the gap. The base of the heat sink conducts the heat generated by the CPU to the fins through the heat pipes, and finally the heat on the fins is blown away by the fan on the CPU heat sink.

Material: We all know that the thermal conductivity of copper is very good, but because copper metal is expensive and heavy, for medium and high-end CPU heat sinks, the base and heat pipe are usually made of copper, while other metals are made of aluminum, in fact, this design is very reasonable, and the heat dissipation effect is better, because the thermal conductivity of copper material is excellent, and aluminum material has better thermal dissipation ability, so aluminum cooling fins and copper heat pipes and base are the best match.

Heat pipes: In theory, the more heat pipes, the better performance. as the base of the heat sink is soldered to the heat pipes, the number of heat pipes will also affect the thermal conductivity. For some high-power heat sinks, which is assemblied with 6-8 heat pipes to increase the thermal conductivity.

Fins: Usually the material CPU heatsink fins are aluminum, in order to dissipate heat faster, the more fins, the larger surface area, and the better heat dissipation performance. The thicker fins, the denser fin pitch, and the worse thermal performance.

Base: Whether the heat sink conducts heat quickly or not, most of the factors depend on the contact surface between the heat sink and the CPU processor. so we have the flatness requirement on the surface of the base; the base is usually made of copper as it has better thermal conductivity.
