Aluminum Folded Fin Heat Sink With Heat Pipes

     Heat sink is an important part of many electronic devices, they are used to dissipate heat and keep electronics at an optimal temperature for operation. Folded fin heat sink is one of the most common heat sink types in the electronics.

   Folded fin heat sink consists of a base plate and fins that are folded back and forth in a zigzag pattern to create a series of parallel channels, these channels allow air to flow through the heat sink, improving the thermal performance, fins are usually made of aluminum or copper due to the excellent thermal conductivity of these metals.

  The manufacturing process of folded fin heat sink starts with the base plate, base plates are usually made from extruded or cast aluminum or copper. For extrusion, metal is forced through a die under high pressure and temperature to form the designed shape. For casting, metal is melted and poured into molds to form it. Once the base plate is ready, the next step is to make the folded fins, the most common method used to manufacture folded fins is the stamping process, in this process, a stamping tool with a series of protrusions is used to shape the fins by pressing the metal into the designed pattern, the depth and shape of the protrusions determine the shape and size of the fins.

  After the folded fins are completed, usually we solder the folded fins with base plate, the soldering process is to combine the folded fin and plate together by the fixture, and put it into the soldering oven, the fins and plate would be combined by the soldering paste. For some high power electronic devices, we also will insert some heat pipes to improve the thermal performance. After the soldering process, then we need to do the thermal test to ensure every heat sink is good.

  Surface finish is a important step for the folded fin heat sinks, after soldering process, there will be some oil and smudginess in the surface of the heat sink, so we need to do the wash to clean the oil and to make the heat sinks have no cosmetic issues.
