Iceotope teamed up with Meta! The world's second liquid cooled storage system came out

Iceotope, the global leader in precision immersion cooling, announced a new research jointly carried out with Meta, which confirmed the practicability and efficiency of the box level liquid cooling technology, and can meet the cooling requirements of high-density storage disks widely deployed and high-frequency used by large-scale data center service providers. The recently published research jointly conducted with Meta shows that the advantages of improving thermal management, reducing vibration and balancing temperature in the entire disk cluster will directly reduce the failure rate and cost of data center operators. Installing the hard disk system in the rack of the chassis drawer is an ideal choice for precision immersion cooling technology.

As the Internet of Things, video, artificial intelligence and other data streams continue to emerge, it is estimated that by 2025, the data stream generated by each person every day will be up to 463 exabytes. Data access and interaction methods are constantly evolving, so data processing and storage will be substantially affected. It is predicted that in just a few years, the global data storage will exceed 200 megabytes, half of which will be stored in the cloud. This is a particular challenge for the storage infrastructure of a very large data center. According to Seagate, cloud computing data centers will choose high-capacity mechanical hard disks to store 90% of Ai bytes. The mechanical hard disk is usually 3.5 inches in size. After repeated trials and tests, this technology can continue to provide cost-effective large-scale storage for data center operators. At present, the capacity of the top equipment is 20 TB, but it is expected to reach more than 120 TB by the end of this decade.

The increase of stored data means that more rotating disks, faster motors and more actuators are required - all of which will lead to an increase in power consumption. As disk power increases, so does the heat generated. In the past decade, the technology of helium in the hard disk box has improved the disk performance and reduced resistance. In addition, with the sealing of the current unit, the mechanical hard disk level liquid cooling solution is also feasible.

This study demonstrated a high-density air-cooled storage system that was redesigned to utilize single-phase immersion liquid cooling. A standard commercial storage system consists of 72 hard drives, two single socket nodes, two SAS expansion cards, network cards, and a 4OU power distribution panel. The hard disk is securely sealed and filled with helium. The liquid cooling system tested is an Iceotope precision immersion liquid cooling system - the air-cooled version has been modified to add a special dielectric circuit connected to the liquid-liquid heat exchanger and cooling pump. Meta continues to measure temperature changes in hard disk drive and cooling pump power in air and liquid cooling systems.

The success of this study shows that precision immersion cooling is a more effective cooling method for mechanical hard disk racks. The results are as follows:
1. With precision immersion liquid cooling, no matter where it is located inside the disk cluster, the temperature difference between all 72 mechanical hard disks is only 3 ° C.
2. Liquid cooling indicates that the mechanical hard disk system can operate reliably when the water inlet temperature of the rack is up to 40 ° C.
3. The system level cooling power is less than 5% of the total power consumption.
4. The liquid cooling operation is almost silent, which helps alleviate the acoustic vibration problems related to the air cooling solution.
