For an air-cooled heat sink module, its effect not only depends on the air volume of the fan, but also on the design of the heat sink. A properly designed heat sink can make the device run stably by only relying on the ambient airflow when the device is not overclocked and not continuously loaded. It can be proved that the importance of the heat sink, and the heat dissipation effect of the heat sink is inseparable from its manufacturing process.
There are five main types of heat sinks which are classified by manufacturing process
1. Stamping heat sink: copper or aluminum can be stamped into the desired shape. Usually used in traditional air-cooled electronic devices, mostly to provide limited thermal performance for low-power devices. Stamped heat sinks are ideal for mass production due to the use of advanced dies and high-speed stamping technology.
2. Aluminum extrusion heat sinks: This heat sink can be used for high power applications. Aluminum extrusion with a specific cross-sectional shape can be formed by extrusion molding, and subsequent processing, such as cutting, machining, etc., can be proceeded. Omni-directional, rectangular pin fin heat sinks, and incorporating serrated fins can be formed by cross-cutting, which can improve heat dissipation efficiency by 10% to 20%, but extrusion of this cross section reduce the extrusion speed. The extrusion molding method also has certain limitations, such as the ratio of the fin height to the fin spacing, and the thickness of the fins, which limit the selection range of design parameters. Usually, the heat sink made by the conventional extrusion molding method, The ratio of fin height to pitch is up to 10, while the minimum fin thickness is 0.8mm.
3. Soldering/assembling fins heat sink: Most air-cooled heat sinks have the limitation of convection environment. The increase of heat sink fins will significantly improve the overall heat dissipation performance of the heat sink. This high-performance heat sink is The fins are soldered to the base with by using thermally conductive soldering paste. Through this process, the ratio of the height and spacing of the fins can be increased to 20~40, which is very convenient in limited space. Greatly improves the ability of the heat sink to transfer heat to the air.
4. Casting heat sink: Using a casting mold, and aluminum, copper or bronze heat sinks can be processed to die casting heat sink under vacuum or normal conditions. This technique is typically used to process heat sinks with high density fins or pin fins, which provide the best heat transfer performance in high-velocity airflow.
5. Skiving fin heat sink: This kind of technology is to use a skiving machine to peel the fins from the aluminum or copper base, this kind of heat sink allows high fin density and thin fin geometries so it can offers better thermal performance than extruded heat sink. Compared with extruded heat sink, skived fin heat sink has no limit of fin height and space ratio, and it has no expensive tooling cost which make it very convenient and flexible for prototype build.
