Comparing with other metals, aluminum has extremely good malleability which makes the aluminum heat sinks can be manufactured by various process includes extruding, machining,die casting, stamping and so on. The material of aluminum heat sinks has two main types alloy: AL6061 and AL6063, both types have excellent thermal conductivity, but due to the different temper, the hardness is different, AL 6061 material is mainly used for machined heat sinks, and AL6063 is mainly used for extruded heat sinks. Although the copper has a better thermal properties, but aluminum heat sink has more lightweight, cheaper and familiar thermal conductivity properties compared with copper, aluminum heat sink is still the most widely used thermal solution. Usually for aluminum heat sinks, anodization is an essential process which can form a aluminum oxide layer in the heat sink surface, it can protect the heat sinks from corrosion and improve the strength.
