6 Heat Pipe CPU Heat Sink

Heat pipes can be directly soldered or epoxied into grooves within the heat sink base enabling direct contact with the heat source, or they can be embedded into holes using a proprietary expansion process that provides an efficient metal to metal thermal interface between the heat pipes and the heat sink base.

     Heat pipe heat sinks are  more and more commonly used  in electronics cooling. With their superior thermal efficiency, they have played a vital role in high power devices. compared with  traditional heatsinks, heat pipe heat sinks can provide better thermal performance 

   

     A heat sink is a component that transfer the heat generated by electronic devices such as processors and graphics cards and prevents them from overheating. Traditional heat sinks are made from a single piece of metal, usually aluminum or copper. They work by conducting heat from the device and then using the fins to dissipate the heat to the surroundings. With the power of electronics is increasing,  traditional heat sinks have some limitations which could not meet the thermal requirements.

   

    First, conventional heat sinks conduct and transfer the heat by the characteristics of the material. As electronic devices become more powerful and generate more heat, traditional heat sinks struggle to keep up with the increased heat generated, resulting in overheating.

   

    Second, traditional heat sinks have limited cooling surface area due to their compact design. The compact design results in a smaller volume of air flowing through the radiator, reducing heat dissipation ability and causing overheating.

 

    Heat pipe heat sinks have several advantages over conventional heatsinks. Heat pipe heat sinks work using the principles of two phase change, which allow them to efficiently transfer heat away from a heat source.

   

   Heat pipes used in heat sinks are made of sealed copper tubes that are partially filled with a working fluid, usually water. When heat is applied to one end of the heat pipe, the working fluid inside evaporates, moving toward the cooler end of the heat pipe. When the fluid reaches the cooler end of the heat pipe, it condenses back into liquid, releasing heat.

   

   Heat pipes use the principle of capillary to transport working fluid. This means that the working fluid inside the heat pipe flows from the evaporating side to the condensing side without the need for a pump. Capillary action ensures that the working fluid reaches every part of the heat pipe, maximizing heat transfer.

   

   Heat pipe radiators have a larger cooling surface area than traditional radiators. This is because the heat pipes can be soldered with zipper fins, folded fins and skived fins, increasing the surface area for heat dissipation. The increased surface area allows for better heat dissipation, reducing the risk of overheating.
