  At present, there are two main cooling methods for CPU: Liquid cooling and Air cooling. For this article, we are introducing the air cooling radiator. The air-cooled radiator is designed to conduct the heat generated by CPU, then transfer the heat to the surface of the heat sink fins, and then conduct convection exchange through the fan. Due to the high-density design of the heat sink, the more heat dissipation area, the better thermal performance.


  The main working principle of the air-cooled radiator is that the heat generated by the CPU is conducted to the heat transfer base through the thermal conductive silicone grease, and the heat transfer base transmits the heat to the heat pipe. Heat is transferred to the fins. Fans are installed at both ends of the fins, and the fans blow the heat out.

  


  How to choose a air cooled CPU cooler?


  As the CPU is more and more intergrated, so the heat density is very high, we need to choose an appropriate CPU heat sink to cool down the CPU and make the CPU work normally. The main effects of air cooling CPU heatsink are as follows:

1, The material type of heatsink;

2, Heat sink fin area and density;

3, The number of heat pipes;

4, The power of fan.


  Since we know the elements which influence the heat sink performance, then how to design and build a suitable CPU heatsink which can solve the thermal issues and cost effective? As we all know that copper is a much better thermal conductor, so usually we will use copper as a pedestal to contact the CPU;  Generally heat pipe is widely used in CPU heatsink as it is a high efficient thermal conductor which can transfer the heat to fins rapidly, Finally for heat sink fins, aluminum is less conductive than copper, but it has better heat dissipation ability, so choose aluminum alloy to be the material of heat sink fins is the best option which can dissipate the heat faster to the air, so it means the thermal performance is improved, evenmore, aluminum is much lightweight and cheap than copper, so aluminum fins is more lightweight and cost effective. Apparently, aluminum fin heat pipe CPU cooler is the best air cooling heat sink for CPU.


  There are two main production processes for the CPU heat sink: reflow soldering and through-fin:


 

Reflow soldering is to solder the heat pipes and fins together by soldering paste, which makes the connection between them closely, and the heat dissipation efficiency is higher, but the price is also higher.


The through-fin process is also called close fitting process, the heat pipes are inserted into the fins without any medium between them, and the heat is conducted only by direct contact.


Through fin has the advantage of a large contact area, and reflow soldering has the advantage of high thermal conductivity. A well-made through fin heat sink is as good as reflow soldering. However, in terms of the stability of the fins, reflow soldering is stronger than through FIN. Because reflow soldering is welding, the position of the heat dissipation fins will basically not move, the heat conduct between heat pipe and fins are much better.
