Air Cooled Heat Sink

The work principle of heat sink is transferring the heat from the higher temperature applications such as CPU, GPU or other electronic components to the lower temperature area like ambient air, coolant, or other medium through the conduction and convection.

Heat sink can be classified into two types for cooling patterns: Air cooled heat sink and liquid cooled heat sink. Now we are introducing the air cooled heat sinks which are designed to transfer the heat from hot side to cold side through air as fluid medium, it's a passive heat exchanger to cool down the electronic components regulate its working temperature. Usually we design a heat sink to increase the surface which contact with the surrounding medium, so when designing a heat sink, the volume of fins, the fin pitchs, pressure drop, thermal resistance need to be considered.

The main varieties of air cooling heat sink

Extrusion: the process is pushing the aluminum ingot into the existing dies to achieve the shape and cut off to get the length, afterward do the further process like machining, surface finishing to complete finished product. Extruded heat sink is a very simple and common heat sink type as it's cost efficient. But the process has some restrictions on aspect ratio and fin thickness and height.

Skiving fins: Skived fin heat sink is shoving a solid metal bar to form the fins, the material usually can be aluminum and copper, this type of process can save the expensive tooling cost compared with extrusion heat sink. and also has little limit of fin thickness and pitch, it can manufacture the very thin fins and higher fin density, so the thermal performance can be improved.

Zipper fin heat sink: the fins are produced by stamping process and often soldered with a base to contact the heat source, if you want to get a better thermal performance, heat pipes and vapor chambers can be embeded, it's a high power heat sink.

Folded fin heat sink: It's another stamping fins which can increase the surface contact area to improve the performance, the material is copper or aluminum alloy.

Bonded fin heat sink: Bonded fin heat sink is putting individual fins into the grooves of a metal plate with thermal conductive epoxy. The technology allows flexible design and prototype, and it's usually used in large applications.
