Copper vapor chamber is a high performance thermal solution for high power devices such as CPU, GPU, high power LED, medical devices, etc. Copper VC is wildly used in various electronics which has small volume and need to dissipate the heat rapidly. Due to the copper has a extraordinary thermal conductivity, copper is the first consideration for vapor chamber material, usually we use C1020 to manufacture the VC for its excellent thermal conductivity and stability.

The Vapor chamber working principle

1.The base of the vapor chamber plate is heated, and the heat source heats the copper mesh micro-evaporator to absorb the heat.

2. Coolant (pure water) is heated and quickly evaporated into hot air (<104 Tor or less) in a vacuum and ultra-low pressure environment.

3. The Vapor Chamber adopts a vacuum design, and the hot air circulates more quickly in the copper mesh micro-environment to conduct the heat.

4. The hot air rises when heated, dissipates heat after encountering the cold source on the upper part of the heat sink, and re-condenses into liquid to dissipate the heat.

5. The condensed cooling liquid flows back into the evaporation source at the bottom of the vapor chamber through the copper micro-structure capillary tube—reflow, the refluxed cooling liquid is heated by the evaporator and then vaporized again and absorbs heat through the copper mesh micro-tubes > heat conduction > heat dissipation repeatedly.

  As the heat pipe, the inner wall of the vapor chamber is also a layer of capillary structure, which is filled with liquid and evacuated. When the heat is released, the internal liquid is vaporized and transferred to the condensation layer, where it is cooled and condensed into water. for this process, the heat pipe has the same working principle as vapor chamber.

The difference between VC and heat pipe

Unlike heat pipes, vapor chamber products are first vacuumed and then injected with pure water so that all microstructures can be filled. The filling medium does not use methanol, alcohol, acetone, etc., but uses degassed pure water, which can improve the performance and durability of the vapor chamber.

The basic principle and theoretical framework of the combination of VC and heat pipe are the same, but the differences are: dimension, manufacturing method, vacuuming and water injection procedures, etc. The vapor chamber practically has the advantages of low expansion thermal resistance, uniform heat flux, rapid heat diffusion, and light weight.

Cost: The heat pipe cooling technology is relatively mature, and the price is relatively low. The VC dissipates heat faster, but the cost is relatively high. It is generally used in electronic products that are smaller in size and require higher thermal performance.

Conclusion:

Both vapor chamber and heat pipe dissipate the heat quickly by evaporating liquid. Vapor chamber has a more complex manufacturing process and higher cost, but has a faster heat dissipation speed than heat pipes.
